Hitachi, Ltd. has received four GOOD DESIGN AWARDS 2024, awarded by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion, for designs created by its Research & Development Group.

The GOOD DESIGN AWARD is Japan’s only comprehensive platform for design evaluation and advocacy, which over six decades has become a familiar sign of good design, along with its G Mark logo. In 2024, there were 5,773 applications from Japan and abroad, of which 1,579 were awarded

The winning designs are:

  • Hitachi Washer “BEAT WASH” BW-X100/X90/V100/V80 series
  • Transportation Bureau City of Sendai, Series 3000
  • Hankyu Corporation 2300 Series car dedicated to the PRiVACE seat reservation service
  • Common Ground Living Lab steering committee

In addition, the Hitachi Washer “BEAT WASH” BW-X100/X90/V100/V80 series was also selected for the exhibition “My Favorite G-mark Exhibition: The Selection from GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2024,” which highlights the personal picks of the 2024 Good Design Award judges—designs that caught their eye or held special meaning for them during the review process—with comments from the judges. The judge’s comments on this design are set out below.

My Favorite G-mark Exhibition: The Selection from GOOD DESIGN AWARD 2024

Judge: Daisuke Kitagawa (Product Designer)
Comments: The dramatic downsizing is wonderful in the way it affects the use of not only this product, but the dryer as well. The clean design is based on consideration for the user in every aspect, and it is clear that this product is the result of careful design and manufacturing, from the whole to the smallest details, intended to seriously address the commercial potential of a mass-market device for Japanese consumers. I felt that this was a wonderful version upgrade for a product line that is now over 20 years old, including the renewal of the logo.

About the GOOD DESIGN AWARD

The GOOD DESIGN AWARD is Japan’s only comprehensive platform for design evaluation and advocacy, managed by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion. It began in 1957 as the Good Design Product Selection System (or G Mark System), established by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (now the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry). In the intervening six decades, the GOOD DESIGN AWARD has developed into a movement to improve Japanese industry and lifestyle culture through design, and is now widely recognized.
